Route 66 in Oklahoma: Mile 20

ok66201.jpg

These concrete park benches lie between two alignments of Route 66 in Catoosa. Benches like these were a common sight along 66 before the advent of fast-food restaurants, when travelers packed their own food and stopped for picnic lunches along the way.

We are now 20 miles from our starting point. You’ve no doubt noticed the changing light conditions; this image is the start of my second trip out to shoot pictures for this project. Because I work full-time and have my plate piled pretty high with other commitments, I’ve had to do this project on a catch-as-catch-can basis, rather than simply crossing the entire state in one hitch. The first 19 shots were done on the evening of Feb. 25, roughly between 5:30 and 7 p.m. This shot was one of 31 images I captured between 4:30 and about 6:30 p.m. on the evening of Feb. 29.
