Road Tip 4

This week’s tip: Shoot first, ask questions later.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve passed up a chance to photograph some cool building or kitschy sign on Route 66, thinking I didn’t have time, or the lighting conditions weren’t quite right, or the weather was too cold or too hot or too wet or too dreary to make it worth the effort, only to find the building or sign gone the next time I passed through.

As hard as all of us on Route 66 work to preserve our history, we can’t keep up with all the bulldozers all the time, and things have a way of changing rapidly. The Mother Road has taught me to keep a camera handy at all times — and to trust my instincts when they say, “Stop and shoot this.”

Even a quick shot out the window with a disposable camera is better than nothing. Take a picture. You may not get another chance … and it will break your heart if you find you’ve missed your opportunity.
